Wildlife

Image credit: Friends of Foots Cray Meadows

There is an abundance of wildlife on the Meadows, much of which are protected in the UK under a range of legislation, making it an offence to kill, harm or injure them, to sell or trade them in any way. This is thanks to:

  • The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981

  • The Conservation (Natural Habitats) Regulations 1994

  • Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000

Species protected under this legislation include the following: bats, breeding birds, great crested newt, reptiles including grass snakes, slow worms and common lizards and water vole.
