Patrolling the Meadows

Mounted police were among a team of officers on July 29 who staged an unscheduled two-and-a -half hour patrol as part of a crackdown on anti-social behaviour on Foots Cray Meadows.

Various issues had been highlighted by members of the FFCM, who attend the monthly meetings of the local police panel, which consists of residents of St Mary’s & St James Ward and officers.

People who were fishing on the lake and close by were spoken to by officers as this is not permitted on this stretch of water. The activity was banned a number of years ago by Bexley Council, which owns and manage the 240 acres of the meadows as a public amenity.

Police also saw evidence of BBQ’s being used. Foots Cray Meadows is a designated Local Nature Reserve and barbecues are not allowed anywhere due to fire risks.

Officers were also given reports and a good description of an off-road bike being ridden across the grassy areas. Officers believe know who is involved and will be issuing a S59 notice warning. This refers to a part of the Police Reform Act 2002 dealing with “vehicles being used in a manner which causes alarm, distress or annoyance”.

The police reported that the presence of the horses went down well and considered the patrol was a great engagement activity with many kids coming over for photos.
